What Is an Index?Index Kya Hota Hai?
Understand how an index summarises the market in one number — and how you can gain exposure to it.Samjho index poore market ko ek number me kaise dikhata hai — aur usme exposure kaise lete hain.
📖 LessonLesson
An index is a single number that represents the combined value of a basket of stocks. When most heavyweight stocks in the basket rise, the index rises.
Think of it as the market's “temperature”. NIFTY at 25,000 does not mean a price in rupees for one thing you can buy; it is a value calculated from its constituents relative to a base value.
Ways to get index exposure:
- Index funds / ETFs — for investors, holding the basket for the long term.
- Index futures and options — derivatives for trading or hedging, cash-settled because you cannot deliver an index.
One point on NIFTY in options is worth ₹1 per unit, so ₹65 per lot of 65 units.
Index ek akela number hai jo stocks ki basket ki combined value dikhata hai. Jab basket ke zyadatar heavyweight stocks badhte hain, index badhta hai.
Ise market ka “temperature” samjho. NIFTY 25,000 ka matlab kisi cheez ki rupee price nahi; ye constituents se base value ke relative calculate hui value hai.
Index me exposure lene ke tareeke:
- Index funds / ETFs — investors ke liye, basket ko long term rakhna.
- Index futures aur options — trading ya hedging ke derivatives, cash-settled kyunki index ki delivery nahi ho sakti.
Options me NIFTY ka 1 point = ₹1 per unit, yaani 65 units ke ek lot par ₹65.
Hypothetical: NIFTY moves from 25,000 to 25,120 (+120 points). For a position with a sensitivity of 1 (like futures), the change is 120 × 65 = ₹7,800 per lot.Hypothetical: NIFTY 25,000 se 25,120 (+120 points) jaata hai. Sensitivity 1 wali position (jaise futures) par change = 120 × 65 = ₹7,800 per lot.
⚠️ Common mistakesCommon galtiyan
- Thinking you can buy “one NIFTY” like a share.Ye sochna ki share ki tarah “ek NIFTY” kharid sakte ho.
- Forgetting that index derivatives are cash-settled.Bhoolna ki index derivatives cash-settled hote hain.
- Ignoring that index level and rupee value per point are different things.Index level aur per point rupee value ko ek hi cheez samajhna.
