Why Options Are High-Risk InstrumentsOptions High-Risk Instruments Kyun Hain
See the four main reasons options can lose money quickly — and what the regulator's data shows.Options me paisa jaldi kyun ja sakta hai, iske 4 main kaaran aur regulator ka data samjho.
📖 LessonLesson
Options are powerful, but four features make them risky for beginners:
- Leverage: a small premium controls a large exposure. One NIFTY lot is 65 units — a 100-point move changes a deep in-the-money option's value by roughly ₹100 × 65 = ₹6,500 per lot.
- Time decay: an option loses time value every day. If the expected move does not come soon enough, a buyer can lose even when the direction was right.
- Expiry: out-of-the-money options become worthless at expiry. Weekly contracts leave very little time to be right.
- Seller risk: option sellers receive a limited premium but can face very large losses on a sharp move, plus rising margin requirements.
This does not mean options are “bad”. It means they require knowledge, a plan, strict risk limits — and the acceptance that most short-term traders lose money.
Options powerful hain, par 4 cheezein inhe beginners ke liye risky banati hain:
- Leverage: chhota premium bade exposure ko control karta hai. Ek NIFTY lot = 65 units — 100 point ka move deep ITM option ki value ko lagbhag ₹100 × 65 = ₹6,500 per lot badal deta hai.
- Time decay: option har din time value khota hai. Expected move jaldi na aaye to buyer direction sahi hone par bhi loss kar sakta hai.
- Expiry: OTM options expiry par zero ho jaate hain. Weekly contracts me sahi hone ka time bahut kam hota hai.
- Seller ka risk: option seller ko limited premium milta hai par tez move par bahut bada loss ho sakta hai, aur margin bhi badhta hai.
Iska matlab ye nahi ki options “bure” hain. Matlab ye hai ki inke liye knowledge, plan, strict risk limits chahiye — aur ye maanna ki zyadatar short-term traders paisa haarte hain.
Hypothetical: Ravi buys one NIFTY call for ₹80 (cost ₹80 × 65 = ₹5,200). NIFTY stays flat for three days. With expiry close, the premium falls to ₹25 — a loss of ₹3,575 even though NIFTY did not fall.Hypothetical: Ravi ek NIFTY call ₹80 me kharidta hai (cost ₹80 × 65 = ₹5,200). NIFTY 3 din flat rehta hai. Expiry paas aate hi premium ₹25 ho jaata hai — ₹3,575 ka loss, jabki NIFTY gira bhi nahi.
