๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Price Action Trading โ€” Complete Guide

Candlestick anatomy, key candlestick patterns, market structure, support & resistance, supply-demand zones, breakouts and risk management.

What is price action?

Price action trading means making decisions from the raw price chart โ€” candles, swings, levels โ€” rather than relying mainly on lagging indicators. Every candle tells a story of who won the battle between buyers and sellers during that period.

Candlestick anatomy

Bullish vs bearish candleGreen: close above open. Red: close below open. Wicks show the high & low; the body shows open-to-close.

Long bodies = strong conviction. Long wicks = rejection of those prices. Small bodies = indecision.

Single-candle patterns

HammerBullish at the bottom of a downtrend โ€” long lower wick shows buyers rejected lower prices.
Shooting StarBearish at the top of an uptrend โ€” long upper wick shows selling pressure.
DojiOpen โ‰ˆ close. Indecision; watch the next candle.
Bullish MarubozuFull body, no wicks. Buyers in total control.
Spinning TopSmall body, wicks both sides โ€” balance between bulls & bears.

Multi-candle patterns

Bullish EngulfingGreen body fully engulfs the previous red body. Strong reversal signal.
Bearish EngulfingRed body engulfs the previous green body at resistance.
Morning StarBig red, small indecision candle, big green โ€” bottom reversal.
Evening StarBig green, small candle, big red โ€” top reversal.
Inside BarSecond candle inside the first's range โ€” consolidation before a breakout.
Three White SoldiersThree strong green candles โ€” powerful bullish momentum.

Market structure: trends & ranges

Uptrend (HH + HL)Higher highs and higher lows. Buy pullbacks to higher lows.
Downtrend (LH + LL)Lower highs and lower lows. Sell rallies to lower highs.
Range / SidewaysBuy near support, sell near resistance โ€” until a breakout.

Break of Structure (BOS): when price breaks the last higher low in an uptrend (or last lower high in a downtrend), the trend may be changing.

Support, resistance & supply-demand zones

  • Support โ€” a price zone where buying stops a fall.
  • Resistance โ€” a price zone where selling stops a rise.
  • Role reversal โ€” broken resistance often becomes support (and vice versa).
  • Supply / demand zones โ€” areas where price left sharply; institutions often have unfilled orders there.
  • Round numbers โ€” Nifty 25,000, Gold 4,000, EUR/USD 1.1500 act as psychological levels.

Breakout vs fakeout

A real breakout closes decisively beyond the level with strong volume and often retests it. A fakeout quickly snaps back inside the range โ€” trapping late traders. Waiting for a close and retest filters many fakeouts.

Risk management: the real edge

Position size formula:

Quantity = (Capital ร— Risk %) รท (Entry price โˆ’ Stop-loss price)

Example: Capital โ‚น2,00,000, risk 1% = โ‚น2,000. Entry โ‚น500, SL โ‚น490 โ†’ risk per share โ‚น10 โ†’ quantity = 200 shares. Target at โ‚น520 gives a 1:2 risk-reward.

A simple price action trading plan

  1. Mark the trend on a higher timeframe (daily / 4-hour).
  2. Mark key support/resistance and supply/demand zones.
  3. Drop to a lower timeframe (1-hour / 15-min) and wait for price to reach your zone.
  4. Enter on a confirmation candle (engulfing, pin bar, inside-bar breakout).
  5. Stop-loss beyond the zone; target the next opposite level (min 1:2).
  6. Journal every trade and review weekly.
